Hammerin' Hank Leads East to
Third Straight All-Star Game Win

BOSTON (June 29) -- After 14 years in the West, first-year Brooklyn Superba Hank Aaron ripped a two-run triple in the fifth inning to lead the East Division to a 4-1 win at Fenway Park.  Eight East Division pitchers shut out the West through eight innings until Don Demeter's solo homer in the ninth, and fellow Superba Dick McAuliffe was the only batter with more than one hit.

The game was the lowest scoring in All-Star Game history and was scoreless until the fourth inning, when McAuliffe led off with a single off Atlanta lefthanded reliever Don Gross.  Manhattan's Ron Santo then singled, setting up Aaron's triple into the left field gap.  After Mickey Mantle's infield popup, Aaron scored on Dick Allen's sacrifice fly.

Aaron scored again in the eighth inning.  After drawing a walk off San Francisco's Clay Carroll, Aaron stole second base, moved to third on Vada Pinson's sac bunt, and scored on a wild pitch.  Carroll also beaned a batter (Dick Allen) to go with his wild pitch, but his effort fell short of Gross' Goat of the Game dishonor.

The East won the first two All-Star contests in 1963 and '64, and the West evened the series with wins the next two years, but the East is now 5-2 overall with wins in Manhattan, Chicago, and Boston the last three years.

St. Louis Win Streak Ends at 14
BROOKLYN (June 25) -- St. Louis' 14-game in streak came crashing down today as the Brooklyn Superbas rolled to an easy 8-2 win behind the arm of righthander Joe Coleman.  Former Maroon Willie Horton homered and drove in five runs as the Bas built a 7-0 lead in the first three innings.

St. Louis finished the month 18-2 and leads the West Division by eight games going into the All-Star Break.  Ron Kline won top honors for Pitcher of the Month, going 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA in five starts, and rookie catcher Ellie Hendricks hit .406 with .625 slugging in 18 games.  Rookie righthander Tom Phoebus improved to 9-1 with a 7-3 win at Cleveland June 21, and closer Bob Locker notched six saves with a 0.82 ERA in June.

Brooklyn Catches Slumping Gray Sox
MANHATTAN (June 26) -- Manhattan's 6-5 win over Cleveland today ended an eight-game losing streak that wiped out a 4.5-game lead in nine days and allowed the Brooklyn Superbas to climb into a first place tie in the UL East Division.  The slump included a pair of losses to their crosstown rivals in Brooklyn on June 18 and 19.  Joe Coleman pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and Hank Aaron homered twice, driving in five, in a 12-2 rout in the first game.  And Mickey Mantle homered twice, including the eventual game-winning solo shot in the fifth inning, in a 5-4 nailbiter in game two.

The eight-game skid included four one-run losses, and six games in which leads were lost in the sixth inning or later.  Jack Aker blew a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth against Washington on June 20, Dave Leonhard blew a 4-1 lead in the eighth against Dallas on June 21, and Dick Radatz and Leonhard blew a 3-0 lead in the eighth against Cleveland on June 24.
