Red Hot Maroons
St. Louis Rides 20-2 Run to First
ST. LOUIS (June 16) -- The St. Louis Maroons won 20 of their last 22 games to surge past the Atlanta Hilltoppers and claim first place in the UL West Division.  The Maroons had one of the most feared lineups in baseball, even before acquiring Roberto Clemente, but they surprisingly have the best pitching staff in the league, despite little offseason help and major injuries to two of their top hurlers.

Many fans and pundits, and perhaps even GM Timothy J. Smith, wrote off St. Louis' chances after the season-ending injury to ace Don Sutton on May 5.  The 1966 Rookie of the Year had a 51-29 record over the last three seasons and got off to his hottest start ever, going 2-0 with a 0.81 ERA in six starts, before falling to a torn labrum on May 8.  The St. Louis rotation has been anything but stable this season.  The team is on its third ace, and the path of Bob Shaw typifies the staff.  Shaw started the season in long relief, but quickly moved to the top of the starting rotation after compiling a 0.76 ERA in his first 10 relief appearances.  On May 25 he strained his rotator cuff, and he will be sidelined until July.  But the Maroons are a staff of many good pitchers, rather than a few great ones, and the injuries to Sutton and Shaw exposed the depth of the organization.

Phoebus and Walker Step Up
Tom Phoebus and Luke Walker were both plying their trade in Triple-A Denver last year, but this year they are two of the hottest pitchers in the league.  Rookie Tom Phoebus pitched 23.1 shutout innings in two starts and four relief appearances between May 23 and June 9, and Luke Walker is 4-0, 1.27 in his last five starts.  But lest anyone thinks the starters have been doing all the heavy lifting, Chet Nichols has a 0.55 ERA in his last 14 games, and former Ray Crone a 0.98 ERA in his last 16.

Manhattan Socking It to Opponents
Long-time Manhattan Gray Sox fans may not recognize this year's team.  A club long known as all-pitch, no-hit, which ranked dead last in runs scored four of its first five seasons, Manhattan has transformed itself into the best slugging team in the league.  Through 71 games, the Sox already have as many home runs (90) as they hit in their entire inaugural campaign, and 3 of the top 5 home run hitters in the league where the gray and dark gray.  Willie Stargell (21), Joe Torre (17), and Pete Ward (17) have combined for 55 dingers, which is more than four teams.  The same trio also fills three of the top four spots in RBIs.  But Manhattan also ranks first in defense and second in pitching, making them the most balanced club in the league.  Ace Bob Anderson, often underrated but probably not for much longer, is 9-0 with a 2.11 ERA and undefeated in his last 15 starts.

Griffins Make a Move
DETROIT (June 16) -- Detroit won 10 of its last 12 games to pull ahead of Cleveland for third place in the East, just 7.5 games back of Manhattan.  Carl Yastrzemski has homered four times in his last seven games, rookie reliever Wayne Granger, the 28th overall pick this year, has a microscopic 0.35 ERA in his last 26 innings pitched, and sophomore second baseman Vern Fuller is hitting .394 in 53 games.
