Detroit's Ken Holtzman was Pitcher of the Month
for May, going 5-1, 2.34 after a rough April in
which he was 1-3 with a 6.48 ERA. The
Griffins maintained second place after sweeping
the Superbas, Holtzman's former team, in
Brooklyn.
Dave Boswell shut out Manhattan
on three hits on May 30 to dip his ERA under
2.00 and keep the Colts within a game of
West-leading San Francisco.
Home
Swept Home Atlanta dropped from 1st
to 3rd after losing 9 of its last 10 home games,
including sweeps by Brooklyn and St. Louis.
The Toppers have 5 more wins on the road than at
home, in the same number of games.

SF Hurler Leads League's
Best Pitching Staff
SAN FRANCISCO (May 31) -- San Francisco ace Bob Moose
topped Don Wilson 2-1 today in a battle of division
leaders, as the Spiders maintained a one-game lead over
Chicago in the West Division. Moose (8-2, 1.84),
who pitched a no-hitter on Apr. 11, leads the league in
ERA and co-leads in wins, and has allowed two or fewer
runs in 9 of his 12 starts. Spider pitching has
allowed the fewest runs of any staff in the league--just
3.4 runs per game. Mike Hedlund was 4-1 with a
1.53 ERA in May, including a four-hit shutout of the
Monuments last night, and Fergie Jenkins has emerged
from a slow start with a 1.50 ERA in his last three
outings. Closer Tug McGraw is tied for 2nd with 15
saves, four of which came in the last week, and has a
5-0 record.
RF Larry Hisle has emerged as the
offensive leader with 15 HR and 29 RBI, despite a .236
average. The club ranks third-from-last in runs
scored, but it has hardly mattered as the Spiders are
12-6 in one-run games, 6-1 in extra inning games, and
6-3 against Chicago and Atlanta, its nearest divisional
rivals in the standings.
New
York Marathon
MANHATTAN (May 20) -- The Detroit Griffins and Manhattan
Gray Sox battled through a 22-inning marathon today, in
one of the longest games in UL history. The teams
combined for 30 hits and 145 at bats, and Bobby Bonds
had 10 at bats in the game, probably setting some kind
of record (Editor's note: the UL's contract with Elias
Sports Bureau, who would know that kind of stuff,
expired last year).
Phil Niekro and Pedro Ramos
were the starting pitchers, and Niekro had the better
day, allowing just 2 earned runs and striking out 7 in 8
innings, as the Sox took a 4-3 lead to the ninth, only
to have Cecil Upshaw blow it when Tom Paciorek singled
in Aurelio Rodriguez (Au-Rod) in the top of the 9th.
Upshaw did his best to end the game in the 10th, serving
up a solo homer to Dick Allen, but the Sox knotted it up
on Vada Pinson's RBI single and the score stood at 5-5
for 12 more innings--that's more than a full game for
those scoring at home.
Finally, at 1:35am, a full
six hours and 30 minutes after the first pitch, Pete
Ward settled the tilt with a two-run blast into the dead
of night--or early morning--off Detroit's Wayne Granger,
who had pitched five shutout innings to that point.
"Hell," Tex Clevenger groused in the locker room, "I
could've done that 11 innings ago and we'd all be asleep
by now." Pete Ward earned the odd distinction of
becoming the first player with 5 hits in a game who was
also hitless for four straight at bats (his hits came in
the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 20th, and 22nd innings).
In
another odd twist for the Gray Sox, within a week of the
game, two Rons were hur running the bases. On May
26, Ron Hunt suffered a high ankle sprain on his "high
ankle" (we think that means "knee"), and two days later
Ron Santo tore a quad. Both players are expected
to miss six weeks, and Hunt's injury came just a week
after inking a $19 million, 3-year extension with the
club. Manhattan GM Eric Holthaus immediately fired
the groundskeepers, even thought the first injury
happened at Griffith Stadium.

Lee May leads the league with 12
pinch hits (.387-4-13 in 31 AB) and is hitting .450 in
his last 16 games. . . League's best record in
home games (20-9), extra-inning games (6-1), and one-run
games (12-6).
|
|
Andy Messersmith struck out 9 Gray
Sox in a 3-hit shutout May 24. The Monuments ace
is 6-1, one of three Washington starters with 6 wins (Podres
and Wise).
|
|
Felix Mantilla became the 12th
member of the 2,000-hit club May 28 in an 8-2 win at
Boston, but the Colts lost 6-5 the next night,
squandering a chance to move into a first-place tie.
|
|
Ken Holtzman was 5-1 in May, with a
2.34 ERA, to win Pitcher of the Month honors. . .
Pedro Ramos (5-2, 3.64) is unbeaten in his last 8
starts, and closer Ramon Hernandez has a 19-game save
streak.
|
|
Joe Morgan homered 3 times in his
last 2 games to bring his season total to 10. He
has a .448 OBP in his last 6 games. . . Mike Corkins has
a 10.20 ERA and 2.13 WHIP in his last 13 games.
|
|
Dick McAuliffe's two-run single
turned a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 win in a thrilling 10th
inning comeback on May 29 after Orlando Cepeda tied the
game with a two-run blast in the ninth.
|
|
Dave LaRoche saved seven games in
seven appearances May 17-31. . . the Maroons were 9-3
over that stretch, including four one-run wins and a
sweep at Atlanta. . . Joe Niekro is 3-0, 1.40 since his
May 16 callup.
|
|
Reliever Chuck Taylor had a 0.77
ERA in May after a 11.81 ERA in April. His
spectacular turnaround helped the Bas improve their
12-16 April record--to 13-16 in May.
|
|
Darrell Porter hit .459-4-10 in his
last 11 games and won Player of the Week May 29. . .
Ken Tatum has 8 saves and a 0.60 ERA in his last 12
games.
|
|
J.R. Richard authored a three-hit
shutout of Atlanta May 28, his second shutout of the
year. He leads all rookies in win (5), shutouts,
and Ks (72).
|
|
Rod Carew hit .455 over 7 games,
then suffered an intercostal strain somewhere between
New York and San Francisco.
|
|
Don Gullett was 4-1, 2.29 in 6 May
starts, and is tied for 3rd in wins and cracked the top
10 in ERA. . . Vada Pinson had 12 RBIs in 3 games
May 26-28. . . Bob Anderson leads the league with 8
losses and 18 home runs allowed.
