| Breaking News | | Torre Named 1972 UL Most Valuable Player Winner Thursday, October 26th, 1972: Joe Torre has been around United League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 1972 season, he's taking home the Most Valuable Player in the United League.
The Atlanta first baseman put up a batting average of .372 with 41 doubles, 4 triples, 49 home runs and 133 RBIs. | | Cy Young Award Winner Announced Wednesday, October 25th, 1972: The Chicago Colts have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Bill Singer, this year's United League Cy Young Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.
Singer compiled a 19-9 record in 33 starts, tallied 219 strikeouts in 258 innings and recorded a 2.23 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .218 batting average against him. | | Washington's Aiton Voted UL's #1 Skipper Tuesday, October 24th, 1972: Douglas Aiton celebrated a successful season with the Washington Monuments by hosting team officials and select media at a Washington area first-class eatery. But, when he first came to town, the 1972 United League Manager of the Year would've been lucky to be invited out for beers with the ground-crew.
"Very few people believed in our ballclub, when I got here. It just goes to show you that a bunch of talented ballplayers playing together can make any old manager a genius," a modest Aiton joked, not fully recognizing his own stature in the baseball community.
However, baseball journalists duly noted his managerial skill as he skippered the Monuments to a 89-73 record this year and a first place finish in the East Division. | | | | |
