League
Endorses 1974 Expansion
NEW YORK (March 1)
–United League top brass signed off on the
circuit’s third expansion today, endorsing a
plan to add two teams in 1974, bringing the
total to 14. Expansion was a
major agenda item at the winter meetings in
Cocoa Beach, Florida, where UL owners agreed in
principle to enlarging the league.
The league’s previous expansions were in
1955 and 1962.
League President Timothy
J. Smith cited the continuing growth of the
league and its 12 healthy franchises as
providing a healthy foundation on which to build
new clubs. “As I speak today,
we have no troubled franchises in the United
League, and the financial health of the league
and the quality of our teams makes this an
opportune time to further expand the league.”
Details of the expansion will be worked out
over the coming months, and the two expansion
cities will be announced at the 1972 All-Star
Game in Atlanta, which itself was passed over in
the 1955 and 1962 expansions, but finally got a
team when the Louisville Colonels relocated in
1965.
The League was giving nothing
away with regard to potential expansion cities,
though officials have noted in past years that
it considered the Triple-A International League
a proving ground of sorts for prospective UL
cities. A league underling
familiar with expansion plans, speaking on
condition of anonymity, said that current IL
cities would be the natural front-runners,
particularly the “six or seven” most successful
cities. The official declined to
elaborate.
Previous expansions have
prioritized opening new geographic markets—the
1955 expansion to Los Angeles and San Francisco
brought bicoastal baseball and air travel, and
the 1962 expansion and the Colonels’ relocation
put teams in the South. The success of the
IL’s Cuban and Canadian clubs has led to
speculation about international expansion.
But other pundits also point to the
example of the Manhattan Gray Sox, and suggest
the possibility of a second team in Los Angeles
or Chicago, where Wrigley Field has sat vacant
since the Colts’ move to the Southside in 1959.
