TOP STORIES

Washington went on an 11-3 tear to grab first place in the East, as Johnny Podres got his 250th career win.  Ray Narleski's replacement, 24-year-old John Strohmayer, notched 13 saves in 14 appearances without allowing an earned run.

Joe Torre is once again top of the class in batting (.384) and RBIs (42), but teammate Sal Bando is the league VORP leader, hitting .340-14-35 with a 1.154 OPS.

Boston's Orlando Cepeda is the league's hottest hitter, hitting .478-9-18 in his last 14 games, but unfortunately for Boston, Johnny Romano .030 (1-33) and Joe Hague .160 (4-25) are among coldest hitters.

Narleski Replacement Doesn't Skip a Beat
WASHINGTON (May 15) -- The Washington Monuments put their slow start behind them and took control of the East Division with an 11-3 run.  Bernie Carbo went on a hitting spree with 21 hits (7 for extra bases) in 13 games, Richie Hebner has hit .395 since May 1, and Johnny Podres got his 250th win and leads the team with 5 wins and 65 strikeouts.

But the top gate attraction in D.C. these days is not one of the league's top offenses or a sure Hall of Fame pitcher, but a young relief pitcher who has stepped into the shoes of the best closer of all time and perhaps improved on his work.

John Strohmayer is his name, and the 24-year-old--who was 4-0, 1.40 in spotty appearances last year--has logged a league-best 14 saves just six weeks into the season, and has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 appearances.  And in 9 of those 14 appearances, he didn't allow a single baserunner.

If you have never heard of John Strohmayer, you are not alone.  He was drafted in the 3rd round in 1970 as the 25th overall pick, and helped the Monuments to their 1970 championship with a 3.29 ERA in 53 games, but was overshadowed by the exploits of Ray Narleski.  When the all-time saves leader hung up his cleats last fall, GM Doug Aiton pegged Stohmayer for the closer job, ahead of veteran Don Drysdale and righthander Chuck Hartenstein.  The youngster from Belle Fourche, South Dakota has not disappointed, and with the 4th best offense, a solid rotation, and the benefit of playing in the weaker division, Mons fans have high expectations for a third straight divisional pennant.

Ron Reed allowed just three hits in three straight starts and was the first to win six games on May 9. . .  Joe Torre leads the league in batting and RBIs.

Johnny Podres notched career win #250 in an 8-4 win at Dallas May 14 . . .  The Mons have won 11 of their last 13 . . . Closer John Strohmayer already has 14 saves.

Lost 9 of last 12, averaging only 2.3 runs per game during the slump . . .  Dave Boswell is dead last in runn support (1.86 runs per game).

Won 5 of last 6 . . .  Bobby Grich is the surprise batting leader, with a .306 average and team-best 9 HR and 21 RBI.

Swept Manhattan May 7-9, allowing just 4 runs in 3 games behind low-hit gems by Mike Hedlund, Bob Moose, and Dick Bosman. . .  CF Larry Hisle leads club in HR (12) and RBI (22).

Rookie Steve Braun collected five hits on May 15, including two in the 9th inning as Brooklyn batted around en route to a 13-5 win at Atlanta.

Gaylord Perry shut out St. Louis with a three-hitter May 4 . . .  Johnny Bench won Player of the Week May 8 after hitting 5 homers in four days and going .407-6-12 for the week.

Veteran Johnny Callison (.337-9-28) and sophomore Don Money (.323-5-26) are in the top 10 in batting. . .  Rick Reuschel nipped Bob Parsons in a 2-1 win over Chicago May 13.

Lost 6 straight May 6-13 and 10 of last 12. . .  Don Sutton's stuggles continue (2-4, 6.88), but Mickey Mantle has been red hot (.280-11-34, .908 OPS).

Dick McAuliffe homered twice in a 12-7 rout at Atlanta May 7. . .  Bert Blyleven blanked the Maroons May 11 with a 4-hit shutout.

Larry Dierker beat Bob Moose and improved to 5-2 with a 7-hit shutout of SF May 14. . . Dead last in runs scored, just 3.6 per game.

Ken Brett anchored a 5-hit shutout at Atlanta May 13. . . 10th in OBP, but 1st in extra-base hits, led by Vada Pinson's 19 and Willie Stargell's 18.
