UL's New Home Run King
Cepeda Cranks #51, Eclipses Aaron/Banks

CLEVELAND (Sept. 3) -- Boston's Orlando Cepeda shattered the UL single-season home run record today with his 51st dinger of the year, a solo shot off Frank Reberger in the second inning of a 4-2 loss at Cleveland.

Cepeda was well on his way to the record at the All-Star Break, with 37 home runs, but slumped in July and August, when hit hit just 13 homers combined.  He had 48 home runs on Aug. 11, but took eight games to get to #49 and another nine games to get to #50 on Aug. 30, but then only three games to break the record today.

The previous record of 50 home runs was jointly held by Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks, who reached the 50 mark in back-to-back seasons in 1964 and 1965 -- Aaron with Los Angeles and Banks with Chicago.  Before '64 the record belonged to Gus Zernial, who hit 46 in 1957.

Boog Powers St. Louis to First
Colts-Maroons Headed for Epic Finish
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 14) -- Boog Powell had his hottest fortnight at the plate since joining the Maroons early last season, hitting eight home runs and driving in 18 runs to lift St. Louis to first place.  Powell hit .391 with a 1.376 OPS in his last 12 games, including five home runs in the first four days of the month.

St. Louis moved into a first-place tie on Sept. 8 with a 3-0 win at San Francisco, when Dave Roberts anchored a three-hit shutout.  Chicago and St. Louis both won on Sept. 11 and lost on the 12th, but the Maroons claimed first place on the 13th with a 5-2 win against Atlanta while Chicago lost in Los Angeles.  Roberts (16-9) was again the winner, while Roy White doubled twice, Reggie Smith hit his 32nd home run, and Dave LaRoche notched his league-leading 37th save.

The two teams now enter the final 16 games of the season with a one-game margin between them and with every indication that the West Division race will come down to the last two games of the year, when St. Louis travels to Chicago to close out the regular season.

Dave Roberts is 10-1 in the second half, 3-0, 2.42 in his last 3 starts, and won the games that moved STL into a first place tie (Sept. 8) and into first place all alone (Sept. 13)

The Mons lost their leading hitting Ron Blomberg (.288-18-64) for the season with a broken hand on Sept. 9 . . .  John Strohmayer's magic has returned (1.29 ERA in last 5 games) after two dismal months.

Felix Mantilla is slumping hard (.185-0-0 in last 8 games) and Wilbur Wood is just 1-2 despite a 2.05 ERA in his last 3 games (2-1 and 3-2 losses).

Rookie starters Burt Hooton and J.R. Richard are a combined 4-0 in September, and Richard is now tied for the league lead with 17 wins.

Joe Torre (.375-43-119) and Sal Bando (.344-41-120) are neck-and-neck for the team lead in HRs and RBIs and are top 3 in batting, HR, and RBI.

Chuck "Hard Luck" Dobson is 10-17 despite a 2.96 ERA, wile Bert Blyleven leads the club with 13 wins with the worst ERA (3.80).

Paul Lindblad has pitched 14 games without an earned run, but Buddy Bradford is hitless in his last 21 at bats.

Reggie Jackson (.249-25-86) kept alive his hopes for a 4th straight 30-HR season with 3 HR in his last 12 games.

John Hiller is 1-1, 0.81 in his last 11 games . . .  Ken Henderson needs just 8 RBI for a 30 HR/100 RBI season.

Ken Brett was 3-0, 1.96 in his last 3 starts, and jumped to 6th in the league in VORP . . .  Steve Garvey hit .394 in his last 11 games.

Rich Nye tore his labrum Sept. 4, adding his name to the longest DL in the league.  The Texans are playing .500 ball so far in September.

Dan McGinn anchored a four-hit shutout of Cleveland Sept. 7, the Bas sixth win in eight games. . .  Bill Stoneman beat STL 4-1 on Sept. 6 then gave up 10 runs in 1.1 innings in his next start.
