OPENING DAY 1968
Maroons Rout Champs
Sutton Anchors Shutout, Reggie Homers Twice

ST. LOUIS (April 1) -- The St. Louis Maroons spoiled the defending champions' opening day with a 15-0 rout at Sportsmans Park.  Reggie Smith had five hits, including two homers, and Don Sutton allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings.  Bill White had three hits and Johnny Romano hit a three-run homer in his St. Louis debut, as 20-game winner Jim Palmer was chased after four innings.
Roy White got the scoring started with an RBI fielders choice in the first, scoring Jim Fregosi, and Tony Perez made it 3-0 with a two-run homer.  Johnny Romano doubled the lead with a three-run homer in the fourth, and Reggie Smith's two-run shot made it 8-0 an inning later.  The Maroons tallied 16 hits, including eight extra base hits, and scored in five straight innings from the fourth to eighth innings.
St. Louis boasts one of the youngest and most talented lineups in the league.  It's 1-5 hitters (Morgan, Fregosi, Smith, White, and Perez) are all under 26.  Through 14 games, the Dark Reds are averaging 5.9 runs per game, second in the league, and had scored eight or more runs five times.

Cleveland 3, Washington 0
Johnny Podres anchored a 5-hit shutout as the Barons blanked Washington at Griffith Stadium.  Chuck Hinton was 2-for-4 with a homer and Harvey Kuenn added a pair of hits.  Jim Nash took the loss for the Mons.

San Francisco 6, Dallas 4
Lou Brock collected five hits and swiped four bases and Roger Repoz homered and drove in three as the Spiders edged Rich Nye and the Texans at Seals Stadium.  Fergie Jenkins got the win and Dallas' Johnny Bench homered in his UL debut.

Brooklyn 4, Boston 2
Gene Conley earned his 279th win, tying Billy Pierce for second all time, with a five-hitter through eight innings, and Ed "The Glider" Charles homered and doubled, driving in three, in his Bas debut, as Mike Cuellar and the Feds lost at Fenway Park.

Los Angeles 8, Chicago 1
Johnny Antonelli notched career win #296 with six shutout innings but left the game with a dead arm.  Felix Mantilla homered in the first and Andy Carey's three-run homer blew the game open in the sixth.

Detroit 8, Manhattan 2
The hosting Griffins jumped to an early 5-0 lead, chasing Bob Anderson, as Frank Howard homered and scored three times.  Johnny Edwards and rookie RF Carl Warwick each drove in a pair as Pedro Ramos rolled to victory.  Tony Oliva was 3-for-4 for the Sox.
