Maroons Shoot Wad on Moose Hunt
Colonels Send Skowron, Aparicio to St. Louis for Package of Prospects
ST. Louis (May 1) -- The three-year Moosehunt is over.  Come tonight at Sportsman's Park, GM Timothy Smith will finally see the much-coveted Bill Skowron in maroon pinstripes after a multi-year quest to acquire the slugging six-time All-Star first baseman.  "We haven't had a righty hit more than 20 home runs since Hector Lopez in '57," Smith told reporters at a press conference announcing the deal.  "We've been on the trail after righties with power for several years now, but until today, we just couldn't nail down anything.  We may have given up the farm for a Moose, but I've always preferred mountains to plains."  Skowron, 32, was selected to the UL All-Star team six years running, and has ranked in the top six in OPS for the last four years.  The Chicago native, who was the 5th overall pick in 1955 and hasn't left the Louisville roster since, is coming off perhaps his best year to date, with a career best 36 home runs and his first 100-RBI, 100-run season.  He has a .314 career batting average and hit his 200th home run just three days ago.
Louisville acquired two first basemen, two pitching prospects, including the Maroons top prospect Mickey Lolich, shortstop Rocky Bridges, and a first round draft pick.  "In my heart I think spare parts, but my head says rebuild," Colonels GM Mark Allen told reporters when asked what the direction of the club was.  Louisville gambled--and lost--on a patchwork of veteran players last year, finishing a distant third and with their minor league system gutted.  The deal adds much needed pitching depth.  A month into the season, the Colonels have the league's worst pitching staff.  They have lost 9 of their last 12 and are in last place.

Root! Root! Root! For The Poem Team
by Charlie Qualls
An outfield drought making way for a Flood
Yogi and Gus pumping "Ensure" for blood.
Harvey's for real, no invisible rabbit
Frank's in the House, though it's just force of habit.
It's Dally's dish now for to pave his Clay path
Eddie's at third still, so ews do the Math.
A White/Power tandem is part of the clan
Right Field is Whitey's 'til Black Mack's the man.
Francis with wolves, Barber not shopped
The accidental Tsitouris (Can he be stopped?)
For 3 and 4 starters, we're loving Don/Juan
And if it's the 9th, then we're ape for Kemm Kong.
In Youth we Rust with the teen-bopper Staub
"I know it was you, Frego - or Gary or Bob."
We won't catch the whale yet, so BRO won't be Herman'd
How good we can be just has not been determined
If you want a prediction how the season will go

I forecast less suck, with a slight chance of blow.
