Colts Win First Nine Games
Mueller Eyes West Division Threepeat
CHICAGO (Apr. 15) -- Chicago picked up where they left off last year, winning their first nine games of 1963 to open up an early lead in the West Division.  The Colts swept Louisville, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before falling on April 10 in a 7-1 loss to Cleveland.  Billy Pierce shut out the Colonels with a five-hit gem on Opening Day, and Norm Cash took home the year's first Player of the Week honors, hitting .556 with 7 RBI and 8 runs.  Chicago is first in most runs scored and fewest runs allowed, and has a four-game lead over second place Los Angeles.

Shutouts and Blowouts Herald Start of New Season
CHICAGO (Apr. 1) -- Chicago's Billy Pierce and Detroit's Pedro Ramos had shutout gems and Washington and Dallas scored in double digits as the United League's 13th season got underway in six ballparks around the league on Monday.

BRO 6, CLE 2 -- Gene Conley allowed one run in seven innings and hit 2 RBIs, and the Superbas touched Cleveland ace John Tsitouris for five runs in the second en route to an easy 6-2 win.

CHI 4, LOU 0 -- Billy Pierce shut out Johnny Antonelli in a battle of 200-game winners.  Dom Demeter was 2-for-3 and Ernie Banks hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

DAL 10, LA 3 -- Gene Green Hittin' Machine was 3-for-4 and drove in 4 runs as Dallas ripped Hank Aguirre for 7 runs in 6 innings.  Dick Donovan struck out 8 and held the Outlaws to three runs, all on solo homers.

WAS 10, BOS 3 -- Dick Kokos homered twice and drove in three runs in his Monuments debut, and Norm Larker, Willie Mays, and Johnny Romano each added a pair of RBIs, as Don Larsen beat Bob Friend.

DET 5, MAN 0 -- Pedro Ramos anchored a three-hit shutout, striking out six, and hit a two-run double in the four.  Eddie "The Glider" Charles was 3-for-4 with two runs.

STL 7, SF 5 -- Billy Hoeft staved off a Spider rally after the Maroons nearly blew a 6-2 lead.  Roger Maris and Billy Williams each homered twice.

Billy Pierce shut out Louisville with a five-hitter, striking out eight.  Ernie Banks homered twice and was 4-for-4 on April 3, the day after Norm Cash homered twice.
 

Gene Conley is 1-2, despite a 1.42 ERA.  Mickey Mantle has just four hits in 12 games (.105, .237 SLG).
  

Bill Mazeroski was 4-for-4 on Opening Day against Dallas.  Tom Tresh homered twice against Dallas on April 7, and Frank Robinson homered twice against St. Louis on the 10th.
  

Eddie Mathews is homerless in 45 at bats after knocking 38 balls out of the park last year (1 every 11.4 at bats).  Ace John Tsitouris, after his opening day drubbing (6 runs in 5.1 innings), has pitched 13 shutout innings in his next two starts.

Luis Aparicio was 4-for-5 against St. Louis on April 8.  New third baseman Willie Jones, age 36, leads the league with a .468 average (22-47).
 

Gray Sox hit 15 home runs in first 13 games, 4th most in the league and most in the East.  Johnny Podres has 25 Ks and a 2.53 ERA through four starts.
 

Steve Bilko was 4-for-5 with 4 RBI against LA on April 3 and leads the team with 12 RBI.  Frank Thomas had four hits against St. Louis the next day.
 

Rookie Hank Fischer has two wins, including a four-hit shutout of Manhattan on April 7.  Rookie Don Mincher homered twice against Louisville April 13.
 

Joe Torre leads the league in home runs (6) and RBI (20), and drove in 7 runs against Louisville on April 8.  Herb Score leads the league in strikeouts, despite not yet reaching double digits in a game.
 

Eddie Bressoud was 4-for-5 against with 5 RBIs against Washington April 2.  League best .294 batting average, led by 37-year old newcomer Bobby Brown (.405).
 

Billy Williams homered twice against St. Louis on opening day.  Rocky Colavito and Gus Triandos homer twice in back to back games April 9-10.
 

Staff plagued by control issues, league high 57 free passes, led by Bob Gibson, who has more walks (17) than strikeouts (16).  Joe Cunningham, who has raised his average three years in a row (.333 last year), is hitting .377 through 13 games.
