Monuments Win 10 Straight
Erskine Extends Streak to Record 22 Wins, Gap Narrows
WASHINGTON (Sept. 17) -- The four-time champion Washington Monuments won 10 straight games, to pull within a game of the East-leading Brooklyn Superbas with two weeks to go in the 1958 season.  The Mons, who have trailed Brooklyn since June, swept four games in San Francisco, then took six straight from New York.
Ace Carl Erskine (24-3, 2.06) extended his UL record winning streak to 22 decisions (in 23 starts).  Erskine, 30, started the year 2-3, but has won 22 of 23 starts since May 7, with one no-decision.  "Oisk" was 27-6 with a 3.06 ERA last year, but lost out in Cy Young voting to Louisville's Johnny Antonelli.  Erskine has inherited the mantle of teammate Stu Miller, as the Monuments' most consistently dominant pitcher.  "Oisk" has won 20 or more games for four straight seasons, and is one shy of his third 25-win season, which would establish a new UL record (one more win would give Erskine three of the seven 25-win seasons in UL history).  Erskine appears to be a shoo-in to claim his first Cy Young Award.  The ace righthander leads the league in ERA (by a half a run), wins, and Ratio (by a full point).
Erskine hasn't been the only hot Washington pitcher.  Vern Law (15-9, 4.57) won four straight decisions with a 1.59 ERA; and Stu Miller () went three starts without a loss for the first time since May, shutting down San Francisco 5-2 on Sept. 6 and five-hitting New York Sept. 12.
Willie Mays has pulled ahead of the pack in both home runs (42) and RBIs (128), thanks to a hot 14-game stretch in September, in which he clobbered five clouts and 17 RBIs.  Hank Thompson kept his slim batting title hopes alive, raising his average to .337 (4th) with a .408 average (20-49) in his last 12 games.  Third baseman Billy Goodman is also having a fine September, batting .362 with 11 RBIs in 14 games.
