Moose on the Loose
Skowron, Colonels Surge Ahead in West
LOUISVILLE (Sept. 1) -- Louisville won 12 of 15 in late August, extending their West Division lead from four to 10.5 games.  Bob Porterfield, 1957 goat, is turning in a 1958 hero.  Last year, the Colonels nursed a slim lead over St. Louis, only to be overtaken by the Maroons when the ex-Superba sputtered in the homestretch.  This year, Porterfield posted a 6-0 record in seven starts since making his first start on Aug. 2.  Reliever Tom Acker was 4-0 in August, despite pitching just nine innings, thanks to a slew of late inning rallies on his watch.  On Aug. 19 in a 2-2 game against Detroit, Acker was the pitcher of record when Nellie Fox singled off Sandy Koufax in the bottom of the ninth to plate Moose Skowron for the game-winner.  The next day, Acker pitched a scoreless ninth to take a 3-3 tie to the bottom of the ninth, when pinch hitter Rocky Bridges singled off Koufax to score Hank Aaron.  On Aug. 29, the score was tied 4-4 after eight, and Acker shut down New York in the top of the ninth, setting up Ed Bailey's game-winning single.
The club had its share of offensive powerhouse during the 'dog days' as well.  Skowron, Valo, and Bailey each posted monthly OPSs in excess of 1.000.  First baseman Moose Skowron hit .385 in August, with 10 doubles, 24 RBIs and a .608 slugging percentage, winning Player of the Week 9/1.  Catcher Ed Bailey drove in an incredible 31 runs in 25 games, the second highest monthly total this year (Mays had 34 in August), while posting a .429 OBP and .607 SLG.  And 37-year-old Czechoslovak outfielder Elmer Valo hit .350-6-28 in 28 games, for a 1.074 August OPS.
The club won six straight Aug. 16-21, three road wins at Brooklyn and Washington, a good omen as the club looks ahead to possible World Series matchups.  While the Colonels were winning, Chicago lost five straight, eventually falling into third place with a 4-12 fortnight.  Louisville leads St. Louis by 10.5 games, whereas they led by just 1.5 games at this point last year.  The clubs have six meetings in September, but with just 28 games left, only an unprecedented collapse stands between the Louisville Colonels and their first United League pennant.
