TOP STORIES

Atlanta climbed three positions to second place in the West, ending May with a league-best 19-8 record, and Joe Torre returned to form to win Batter of the Month.

San Francisco's Bob Moose extended his record to 10-0 on May 27 and Boston's Jerry Koosman (10-1) won his 10th on the same day.

Four teams clustered within two games atop the East Division, as Washington lost 4 of its last 6 and the Federals won 4 of their last 5.

Larry Dierker tossed his third shutout of the season May 22, a four-hit gem against Dallas, but the Outlaws continue to struggle in fourth place in the West.

Detroit's Ramon Hernandez has saved 11 straight since April 4 and co-leads the league in saves.

Moose Undefeated in 14 Starts
Spiders Ace is 10-0

ST. LOUIS (May 27) - Bob Moose anchored a five-hit shutout of the Maroons today, improving his perfect record to 10-0 in 11 starts and dipping his league-best ERA to 1.94.  Moose won his first four starts with two complete game shutouts and a microscopic 0.55 ERA before getting no decision in his fifth start, a 5-2 San Francisco win at St. Louis.  He has since rattled off six wins in six starts since April 28, despite a 2.85 ERA.  On May 3, Moose allowed seven runs in 7.1 innings, but still won as the offense produced 11 runs against Washington.  The 25-year-old righthander is unbeaten in 14 starts dating back to September.

Toppers Jump to Second
Torre Wins Batter of the Month
x (x) -- Sal Bando and Joe Torre returned to their 1972 form, combining for 45 RBIs in May to lead the Atlanta Hilltoppers from sixth to second place.  Atlanta was 19-8 for the month, leapfrogging Los Angeles and slumping San Francisco and St. Louis.  Torre hit .411-3-20 with a 1.000 OPS and took Batter of the Month honors.  Bando hit just .240 but managed to drive in 25 runs in 27 games with nine home runs and a .560 slugging percentage for the month.  The Toppers are averaging a league-high 5.0 runs per game, which continues to fuel their winning patch despite sub-par pitching.

Three mound standouts have been ace Tom Bradley, who was 4-0, 0.86 in 5 starts, Ron Reed (5-0, 2.98), and Steve Carlton (4-1, 1.94).  Their combined 13-1 record comes on the heels of April's 2-10 combined mark.  The Toppers swept San Francisco May 17-19 and then took two of three at Chicago to close the gap with the division leaders.
