TOP STORIES

Washington lost seven straight to drop out of the playoff hunt.  Closer Joe Hoerner lost three times, including two blown saves, and Bernie Allen and Ray Fosse were a combined 2-for-38 in the skid.

St. Louis rebounded with six wins in seven games to get back in the hunt for fourth place.  Rick Dempsey's three-run homer in the ninth beat Dallas 6-5 on Sept. 6.

Atlanta's Joe Torre further burnished his Hall of Fame credentials with his 2,500th hit, placing eighth on the all-time list.

Griffins Climb Back to 3rd
Mons Fade, Surging Maroons in Playoff Hunt
DETROIT  (Sept. 1)
-- The Washington Monuments lost seven straight, including four one-run decisions, and 11 of 12, transforming the playoff picture into a four-team race for three spots.  Lefthander Vida Blue has lost five of his last six decisions and the club were swept in a critical three-game series in Detroit that widened the margin between those clubs to seven games with 12 games to go.  The low point was Sept. 4, when the Griffins drubbed the Mons 20-4 with 5-RBI games for Don Money and Denis Menke.  For Detroit, the sweep was important, as the Griffins lost three of their other four games with Manhattan and Cleveland.  Detroit lost two of three at Manhattan Aug. 30-Sept. 1, but the Sox were swept in Chicago and lost a series to Brooklyn, dropping to fourth place.

St. Louis recovered from a late August swoon with six wins in their last seven to pull within three games of the last playoff spot.  Jon Matlack anchored a four-hit shutout of Atlanta on Sept. 4 for his 10th win and Rick Dempsey delivered a three-run homer in the ninth to topple Dallas 6-5 on Sept. 6.  The Maroons play Detroit in the last week of the season, in a three-game set with huge playoff implications.
