Grieve
Lifts Sox Back to Top Four
AUGUST 1 (Manhattan)
--
Tom Grieve batted .330-12-29 in July, winning
Batter of the Month honors and leading the Gray Sox to a
16-8 record in the month that lifted them back into the
top four after a late June slump. Greive, last
year's league MVP with the Denver 14ers, leads the
league home run and RBI chases by wide margins, but he
is by no means the only threat in the Manhattan lineup.
Rico Petrocelli is tied for fourth in homers and Steve
Garvey is in the top 10 in RBIs.
Steve Carlton
has extended his winning streak to 12 and is putting his
name in the Cy Young hat with a 15-3 record and 2.88 ERA
and he is backed by the best bullpen in the league.
Closer Ken Tatum leads the league with 20 saves and has
a 1.88 ERA, and he is supported by Chuck Dobson (1.13),
Bill Campbell (2.08), Ed Farmer (2.44), and Buzz Capra
(2.57).
The Sox completed critical series wins
over Washington, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, other
contending teams that figure to be in the playoff hunt
through late September.
Outlaws Also Surge
The Los Angeles Outlaws swept the Chicago Colts to pull
within three games of the top four. Larry Dierker
blanked the Colts on three hits for his 22nd career
shutout July 29, 11 days after he got his 10th win of
the year, ensuring his 11th straight season of
double-digit wins. On July 30, Fritz Peterson
outduelled Juan Pizarro in a 2-1 nailbiter, with the
winning run coming on a Dave Winfield solo shot in the
eighth. Tony Perez won the July 31 finale with a
two-run homer in the 17th to break a 5-5 deadlock.
The Outlaws were 15-9 in July despite a tepid and
injury-plagued lineup, as the pitching staff carried the
club. Larry Dierker, Fritz Peterson, and Phil
Niekro combined for 13 quality starts in 14 July starts
and L.A. allowed two or fewer runs in 13 of their 24
games. Fritz Peterson had a 1.26 ERA in five
starts, and Larry Dierker's July ERA was 2.08.
Griffins Slump
No team in the league will be happier to see the
calendar flip to August than Doug Kohn's Detroit
Griffins. Detroit fell from the top four with a
horrible 8-16 July, and have lost 11 of their last 15 as
their offense has ground to a halt. Detroit scored
less than three runs 12 times in July and was shut out
three times in four days July 20-23, as the once torrid
bats of Brian Downing and Willie Stargell have cooled
off and Reggie Jackson remains mired in a season-long
slump. The starting pitching, which some would
argue was overperforming in the first half, has also
fallen on hard times. Ken Holtzman (7-11, 4.53)
has lost six of his last seven decisions and Bruce Kison
has lost four of five after a five-game winning streak.
Dave Hamilton, fresh off his no-hitter on July 13,
pitched eight shutout innings against Manhattan, July
19. He then pitched 4.2 innings of no-hit ball on
July 24, making an incredible stretch of 21.2 innings in
which the rookie southpaw allowed a single hit.

leads all regular catchers with a 63.2 caught
stealing percentage. Elliott Maddox has the most
total chances in center field without an error (217). |
|

|
3B "Beltin' Bill Melton holds the
ignominious distinction of having committed the most
errors in the league (16). Amos Otis
leads all center fielders in range factor
(2.73). |

|
Teams have attempted 41 steals against Brooklyn, fewer
than any other team. |
|

|
SS Rick Auerbach has the highest range
factor amontg UL shorstops (5.45). |

|
The Feds lead the league with 95 double plays, a
category usually led by weak pitching teams because
there are men on base frequently. |
