A Kind of Blue
Monuments Enter Chase
WASHINGTON (June 16)
-- The Washington Monuments surged to fifth place, just two games out of the playoff picture, with a 13-4 run.  Vida Blue pitched back-to-back shutouts in wins over Detroit and Chicago and has won four of his last five starts.  The 25-year-old southpaw is 5-2, 1.75 in eight starts since joining the Mons on May 1.  Ace Don Wilson is unbeaten in his last four starts, with thee wins and a 1.42 ERA.  The Mons pitching staff ranks fourth overall in ERA, but has produced three shutout wins in the last eight games, by Blue, Clay Kirby and Don Wilson/Milt Wilcox.  Ron Blomberg, meanwhile, has led the offense with a .388-5-10 batting line in June, including homers in three straight games.

Washington won three straight East Division flags in 1970-72 but finished second in the East in '73 and a disappointing seventh overall last year.

Texans Future in Doubt
DALLAS (May 16) -- It has been a rough decade for the Dallas Texans. The most successful first-year expansion team in UL history--with 97 wins in its inaugural 1962 campaign--had has just three winning seasons in its next 12 years since and has finished in the bottom three of the league in seven of the last nine. Attendance is falling at a startling pace, revenues are in a four-year decline, the balance sheets are splashed with red ink, and the stadium is slowly crumbling.

Then comes news this week that due to the high turnover rate in the disorganized front office, the club has lost its stadium lease renewal amidst a pile of paperwork. The club’s lease with Tarrant County expires after this season and the Texans face a June 30 deadline to keep playing at Turnpike Stadium. Six Flags Over Texas has designs to annex the property for an expansion of one of the Lone Star State’s largest theme parks.

If the stadium lease lapses, the Texans almost certainly face relocation. Its options are limited and given the chaos in the front office, the club is only now beginning to make contingency plans. The issue has come to the attention of the UL, and league officials are working with the club to help resolve the issue.

The easiest and cheapest option would be to move the club to Memphis, home of the Texans’ Triple-A affiliate. But American Legion field, with a seating capacity of just 9,841, is inadequate for major league play,. Memphis officials claim they could raise the capacity by about 8,000 within a matter of months, but the limited facilities and the small fan base would make this only a temporary solution. The club could move to Colt Stadium in Houston, current home of the Triple-A Generals, an affiliate of the Atlanta Hilltoppers. Further afield, there are the handful of cities that made the short list for last year’s expansion, including Havana, St. Paul, Seattle, and Portland. Of these options, the most move-in ready is probably Seattle, where the King County Multipurpose Domed Stadium is slated for completion in early 1976.

Jim Barr has a league-leading five saves in June.  The Maroons beat Cleveland 10-2 on May 13, improving their league-best road record to 23-19.

Won 1-0, 1-0, and 2-0 wins in last two weeks in games started by Bruce Kison (2) and Ross Grimsley.  5-4 win over Cleveland May 24 was 8th consecutive extra-inning win without a loss.

Mike Hedlund (8-0, 2.18 overall) is unbeaten in 13 starts and has a 0.34 ERA in his last three, including shutout wins over Manhattan and Cleveland.  Fergie Jenkins' 13 QSs lead the league.

Bill Gogolewski was 3-2, 3.09 in his first five starts with the Sox.  Ken Tatum has a 0.70 ERA in 23 of his 24 games -- he allowed 6 runs in 0.2 innings vs. Dallas on Apr. 6.

Jerry Martin is the first Outlaw CF in the post-Ken Henderson era.  A 4th round pick in 1974, Martin is batting .270-4-13 and has fielded well.

Dock Ellis, Ernie McAnally, Mike Nagy, and Jim Rooker are the first foursome with 10 quality starts each. . .  Max Leon leads the league with 6 blown saves, and his done it in back-to-back outings twice.

Ed Figueroa (9-4, 1.98) leads all rookie pitchers in wins and VORP.  He was 6-0 through May 6 and is 3-4 since. . .  Robin Yount's sophomore slump continues (.214-1-24, .586 OPS).

Vida Blue edged Ed Figueroa 1-0 in a June 8 battle between two of the league's best young hurlers.  Figueroa allowed just five hits, but one was a Ron Blomberg homer that proved to be the game-winner.

Steve Carlton produced the league's second one-hitter of the year on June 14, a 3-0 win over Cleveland.  Tom Grieve had a 2-homer game June 3, a 5-hit game eight days later, and was named Player of the Week.

Barons pitchers have a league-leading 28 CGs and 11 shutouts.  Rennie Stennett is the league's hottest hitter (.522 in last 6 games).

Texans offense has turned out 78 runs in last 11 games.  They crushed Brooklyn 18-12 on June 6, but were shut out 12-0 the next day.  Benny Ayala had 4 hits and 6 RBI in the slugfest.  Dallas is 12-2 vs. BOS and CLE, but 20-37 vs. the rest of the league.

Mike Schmidt has 4 homers in his last 8 games, and is emerging as a potential MVP candidate (.346-16-51, 1.016 OPS); he led the league in RBIs and total bases in May.

John Wockenfuss (.305-13-36) leads all rookie batters in hits, home runs, RBIs, and total bases.

The Feds were 12-6 from May 20 to June 8, but have lost six of their last 7.  Rich Folkers is 0.87 with a 0.77 WHIP in his last seven games.
