TOP STORIES

St. Louis surged ahead of Atlanta to seize first place in the West.  Led by the UL's second best rotation, the Maroons have won 17 of their last 25.

Los Angeles locked up Fritz Peterson, one of its multiple aces, with a massive long-term contract, but lost slugging outfielder and fan favorite Ken Henderson to a career-ending injury.

Boston, off to the worst start in the league in over a decade, came to life with five wins in their last six games.

 St. Louis Atop West
CLEVELAND (May 31)
-- The St. Louis Maroons competed a 19-10 month today with a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Barons
.  Doc Medich anchored the two-hit shutout and Jim Barr earned his fifth save of the campaign.  Medich and Matlack have been nearly unhittable this season, with 1.84 and 1.60 ERAs, respectively, and fifth starter Joe Niekro is 5-0 with a 2.44 ERA.  The Maroons ranked third in overall pitching and second in starting pitching, but the offense has also improved this year, with Reggie Smith (.257-12-34) and Graig Nettles (.255-12-32) forging the league's fifth-leading attack.

Peterson Inks Five-Year, $48 Million Extension
LOS ANGELES (June 1)
-- Los Angeles ace Fritz Peterson signed what is believed to be one of the biggest contracts in UL history on May 20.  The 33-year-old southpaw will stay with the Outlaws through 1979, with a team option year for 1980.  Peterson has four straight wins since going just 1-3 in his first eight starts.  His six-hit complete game win over Montréal on May 31 was career win #150, which puts him behind only teammate Larry Dierker among active pitchers.  Peterson was the 6th overall pick in 1966 and cracked into the rotation immediately, winning 14 in 31 starts.  He has started 313 games in 10 seasons, compiling a record of 150-96 with an ERA of 2.94.  He has the third highest pitching VORP since that stat was introduced in 1963.

Peterson has gone to arbitration in each of the last four seasons, earning progressively higher salaries, from $3.96 million for 1972 to $5.75 million this year.  But with Fritz eligible for free agency after this season, GM Peter Vays wanted to lock him up early to avoid any uncertainty or clubhouse distractions as the season progresses.  Los Angeles is 31-26 after two months of play, and sits three games out of the playoff spots.  The club was 18-11 in May thanks to the stellar pitching of what is now three aces: Peterson, Dierker, and rookie Dennis Leonard, who
co-leads the league in wins, is second in ERA, and took Pitcher of the Month honors.

Ken-Hen Suffers Career-Ending Injury

Los Angeles right fielder Ken Henderson, 1971 Rookie of the Year, and 3-time All-Star, suffered a career-ending head injury on May 13, one month shy of his 28th birthday.  Henderson, the 34th overall pick in 1967, spent four years in the minors before bursting on the scene in his fourth pro season.  He batted .310-27-96 with a .924 OPS and won ROY in a walk.  In four full seasons with the Outlaws, Henderson had three 30-homer seasons and three times drove in 96 or more runs.  His 132 home runs is the most for any active player under 29.  Henderson averaged about 50 VORP over the last four years, but was still on a $500k contract, making him one of the cost-effective run machines in the league.

Henderson had been batting fifth and playing center field, but his cool bat (.228-4-12 with a .666 OPS) and Dave Winfield's breakout season had reduced his playing time.  Despite his abbreviated career, Henderson ranks as one of the Outlaws' all-time greats.  He ranks third in club history in OBP, SLG, and OPS, fourth in home runs, and fifth in runs and total bases.
