TOP STORIES

Rod Reed won Pitcher of the Month with six wins and a 2.06 ERA in seven starts, as the Hilltoppers finished the month in first place ahead of San Francisco and red hot St. Louis.

Denver third baseman Steve Ontiveros had five hits in a game vs. Chicago on Apr. 24 and won Rookie of the Month with the 7th best batting average in the league (.340).

Boston ended the month with a lock on last place at 8-20.  The Feds were swept by Los Angeles and Dallas, were shut out five times, and lost catcher Manny Sanguillen for the season.

Veteran GM Glen Reed joined Lance Mueller in the 2,000-win club with his landmark victory on Apr 4.  Reed joined the league in 1952 and has managed Brooklyn (twice), Atlanta, and Montréal.

 Newcomers Lift Montréal
V's on a Good Trip With Dock Ellis

MONTRÉAL (May 1)
-- The second year Montréal Voyageurs won 10 of their last 14, led by their two big offseason acquisitions: second baseman Bobby Grich and pitcher Dock Ellis.  Grich led the club with 20 RBIs in April, hitting at a .337 clip, while Ellis went 4-1 in 6 starts, including a three-hit shutout of Dallas on the last day of the month.  Montreal is fourth in runs, tied for third in pitching, and has climbed into a four-way tie for fourth place.  Aside from Grich, three other players are batting over .300: Ben Oglivie, Gary Carter, and the "Rooster" Rick Burleson.

Ellis, 30, a 2nd round pick in 1968, won 59 games in six seasons with the Griffins.  His best full season was 1971 (15-9, 3.69), but his 1973 campaign was cut short by a back injury after a stellar start (5-2, 1.68 in 10 starts).  Grich, a 25-year-old Michigan native, was a 2nd round pick in 1970, and quickly vaulted to the top echelon of United League second basemen, batting .292 in his rookie campaign in '71 and compiling a .288 average and .809 OPS in four seasons with the Flyin' Lions.

Maroon Hurlers Have Batters Seeing Red
ST. LOUIS (May 1) -- The other red-hot team in the UL is the Dark Reds.  Three St. Louis starters have ERAs under 2.00, which has allowed the club to surge in the standings despite having only one regular hitting over .280.  Jon Matlack appears to have put his rocky 1974 season behind him, posting a 1.29 ERA in three starts since returning to the rotation Apr. 17.  Doc Medich's 0.99 ERA in four starts has yielded just one win, due to anemic run support (just one run in each of his last three starts).  And fifth starter Joe Niekro has been tearing through opposition lineups with five quality starts out of six and a 1.93 ERA.  So good has the pitching been that the Maroons swept Cleveland with three one-run wins, including the 2-1 finale in which Niekro and two relievers outdueled J.R. Richard.  Reggie Smith, another Maroon coming off a couple off-years, leads the offense, hitting .295-6-14 with a .914 OPS.  GM Joanna Graham is hopeful that the rest of the offense will awake from its two year slumber and lift the Maroons into playoff contention.

Dave Parker, last season's top rookie, won Player of the Week Apr. 28 after hitting .522-2-8. . . CF Juan Beniquez is batting .372, nearly 100 points higher than last year . . .  Joe Torre was beaned Apr. 30 by Washington's Andy Messersmith and charged the mound, unleashing a bench-clearing brawl.  Both were suspended for three games.

The Sox are clutch.  4-0 in extra innings and 7-1 in one-run games.  Carlton Fisk, Craig Robinson, and Steve Garvey are a combined 7-11 in extra innings.  Buzz Capra has allowed one earned run in 14.2 innings (0.61 ERA).  Steve Garvey and Joe Torre are the only players in club history to win Batter of the Month.

The Maroons have won five straight and seven of their last eight. . . The bullpen took a hit when Dave LaRoche went down with a shoulder injury Apr. 23.  He had four saves and a 0.64 ERA in 9 games, but will now miss most of the season.

Bob Locker, the career saves leader among active pitchers, added five more in April and is within eight of overtaking Bob Chakales, Dave Sisler, and Frank Smith and moving into 7th place all-time.  24-year-old Bruce Kison has had a great start as the new ace (4-2, 2.34 in six starts).

Thurmon Munson has a 21-game hitting streak and a league-best .398 batting average.  Last year's third-worst offense, the Arachnids lead the circuit with a .291 batting average.  Ron LeFlore leads the league with 5 pinch hits.

LF Bernie Carbo injured himself making a leaping catch against the high right field wall off the bat of Lou Brock Apr. 29.  His diagnosis is pending.  Former reliever Mike Torrez is taking well to the starting rotation (3-2, 1.78 in 6 starts).

Bill Singer has righted his horrendous start.  "Sing Sing" was 0-3, 4.85 in his first three games, and is 3-0, 0.69 in his last three. . . Amos Otis, a Gold Glove center fielder but only .268 hitter coming into this season, leads the club with a .325 average.

Dock Ellis' great start has overshadowed the fine work of fifth man Mike Nagy (3-0, 2.20 in 5 starts). . . V's pitchers authored four shutouts in the last 13 games, anchored by four different starters: John Rooker, Mike Nagy, Elias Sosa, and Dock Ellis.

Pedro Borbon has had more impact than any other player, and not in a good way.  The 28-year-old Dominican is already 1-6, including 4 blow saves, with an astronomical 9.28 ERA.  His most recent disaster?  Blowing a 3-1 lead in Montréal by serving up a grand slam to Rich Coggins.  Two nights before he blew a 2-0 lead without recording an out.  The Outlaws are 5-10 in one-run games.  Dennis Leonard leads all pitchers with most innings pitched without a home run (42).

Vada Pinson is the early leader for the Willie Mays Award, leading the league with a +6.0 Zone Rating, which translates into 6 runs saved for his club, which helps explain the Barons' 2.51 ERA.  Tim Foli (+3.8) and Jorge Orta (+2.4) also rank in the top 15. . . J.R. Richard, with 49 wins the last three seasons, has yet to win in 1975 (0-4, 4.07).

John Candelaria, the third overall pick in this year's draft, will require Tommy John surgery and will miss the season. . . Rod Carew had 5 hits, and Dave Concepcion and John Ellis 4 each, in a 14-4 rout of Boston Apr. 28.  Carew already has 13 doubles and is on pace to shatter the single season record.

The Brooks swept Dallas then lost four straight to San Francisco and St. Louis, giving up 36 runs.  One starter (Fernando Arroyo) and three relievers (Charlie Hough, Bill Greif, and Goose Gossage) have ERAs over 7.00 . . .  LF Greg Luzinski has hit safely in 13 straight games.

John Wockenfuss is eyeing the full-time starting catcher job after a 2-HR, 6 RBI game at Washington Apr. 27.  He is hitting .302 in 24 games, while Duke Sims is batting .160.

How bad has Boston's hitting been?  Here are the batting averages of the six players with the most at bats: .212 .214 .230 .226 .193 .153.  Orlando Cepeda has managed to hit 10 HR and 19 RBI with a .212 average -- he has more homers than singles.
