1970 PREVIEW ISSUE
O, No!  Japanese Monster Smashes 1970!
The Year in Preview

by Charlie Qualls
We tried to warn you that this woman was trouble. If this shrieking step-mother of Japanese pop art has her way, 1970 may not be a fun place to be. Even her boyfriend is going to eventually start imagining life without her. The UL’s least biased prognosticators got together in a room, listened to Beatles A-Z (compiled by none other than league founder, Tim Smith), then got to work figuring out the kind of mess we’ll be in if this voice of a cow choking on a mongoose woman isn’t put down by any means necessary. Least biased, I swear.

• Seven years after they convinced us they wanted to hold our hands, The Beatles will decide to Let It Be. Fuckin’ Yoko.
• Eighteen-year-olds in the United States will finally be granted the right to fight and die in public elections.
• The first computer “floppy disc” will be introduced, revolutionizing data storage. Early indications suggest they’ll be “floppy” and “disc shaped.”
• The First Annual New York City Marathon will be started accidentally as thousands flee an impromptu Yoko Ono concert.
• If you’re on the Kent State or Marshall University waiting list, be patient. There may be some unexpected openings this year. If not, there’s always the National Guard or Southern Airlines.
• In the United States, The Controlled Substance Act will be passed as part of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, but only to shorten its name. Not receiving the memo: Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
• Yoko Ono will be smuggled aboard Apollo 13 in an effort to ditch her on the moon. However, the plan will backfire when Ms. Ono’s singing ruptures an air tank, almost literally breaking up the stellar group of astronauts.
• The FDA will finally approve the use of Lithium as a viable treatment for “dementia and mania.” The NFL will counter the move by airing games nationally on Monday Nights.
• After viewing Earth’s majesty and fragility from space, humankind will decide it needs protecting. The First Annual Earth Day will premiere and The Environmental Protection Agency will be formed. The subject of the environment will never need to be brought up again.
• Nothing particularly interesting will happen to Curt Flood this year. He’ll continue to be paid well to play the game he loves.
• Expo ’70 will open in Osaka, Japan after it is learned that Yoko Ono is a permanent UK resident.
• The word “spork” will be coined and copyrighted. Chefs across Sweden get a 16% increase in vocabulary.
• Rocker Jerry Lee Lewis will divorce his wife of twelve years.

Commissioner's Best 5 Songs:
• The Kinks - Lola   • Santana - Oye Como Va   • Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio
• Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water   • Sugarloaf - Green-Eyed Lady

With no one to fill Demeter's shoes and rotation flimsy after Peterson and Dierker, L.A. could see another year of decline.  Frank just 46 homers shy of 500.

The champs shore up their offense with Flood and Nettles and add depth across the board, but will GM Tim Smith's overachieving pitching staff maintain its form?

After only 2 winning seasons in the '60s, no one was happier to see the decade rollover than GM Jeff Tonole.  Offense gets boost from Munson, and defense from 4-time Gold Glove Hansen, but all eyes will be on the attempted comeback of '68 Cy/ROY Bob Moose.
