Pedro Ramos
Starting Pitcher, Detroit Sound, Detroit Griffins, Manhattan Gray Sox · 1956-1973

Let's ignore those 16 innings Pedro Ramos pitched for the Gray Sox in 1973, or the contract signed three months earlier for the Barons.  Pete was a Griffin, pitching 16 seasons in Detroit; all but the first and last as staff ace.  Over that period, Ramos went 277-196 for a franchise that never really challenged for honors, and never reached the postseason.  The closest Ramos came was when he was given the ball for the last game of the 1970 season, knowing a W would send the Griffins to the Series.  The Boston Federals hit four homers off him, behind a strong Jerry Koosman start, and the next night the Monuments out-slugged Detroit in the single game playoff.

Ramos has three claims to (the Hall of) Fame.  First, sustained greatness -- 277 wins and 3,000 Ks place him among the elite.  Sixth most wins all-time and eighth most Ks place him firmly within the top 10 hurlers in league history.  He is undoubtedly the best pitcher in Griffins history, a legitimate ace holding together a franchise.  Second, a period between '62 and 65', where he averaged 22 wins a year, had an ERA under 3.00 three times, and struck out over 200 a year.  Best of all was 1962, when he went 27-10 with a 2.69 ERA in 368 innings over 45 starts (Ramos was just pipped to the Cy Young by Johnny Antonelli).

Ramos was a five-time All-Star, and four-time All-UL, winning close to 300 games for a team that finished an average of six games under .500 over the last twelve years (one wonders what might have been had he pitched in Brooklyn or Chicago).  His star would be even brighter had he not pitched amongst contemporaries like Antonelli, Conley, Podres and Ford, who made the amazing seem ordinary.  Ramos retires as the iconic Griffin, the staff ace for the best part of two decades, and one of the top-10 pitchers in UL history.  (Doug Aiton)
