Howser Closes In On .400
Spell on DL Improves Chances
WASHINGTON (Sept. 16) -- Dick Howser strained a bicep tendon on Aug. 24, an injury that wiped out most of the remaining season, but also increased his chances of finishing the year over .400.  Howser had 593 plate appearances up to Aug. 24, well above the 503 needed to qualify for the batting title.  Howser is hitting .413 and is expected to return to the lineup Sept. 21, in time for the Monuments' last 10 games.  At his current rate of 4.2 AB per game, Howser needs only to hit .238 in the last 10 games to seal the first .400 season in UL history.
Howser, a two-time batting champion,  hit .393 in 1963, falling
four hit short of the first .400 season since 1941, but smashing Granny Hamner's single-season batting record by 30 points and setting a UL record with 238 hits.  A 2nd round pick, 12th overall pick in 1961, showed little promise in his first two seasons, batting .272 and .226.  His improvement from 1962 to 1963 was one of the most dramatic single-season upturns in UL history.  Playing in almost the exact same number of games, Howser nearly doubled his hit total (from 127 to 238), raising his batting average 167 points.  In the last four seasons, Howser has surpassed the hitting accomplishments of even Granny Hamner.  The former Brooklyn Superba great hit over .350 six times from 1957 to 1964, but never hit better than .364.  Howser, by contrast, has hit .380 over the last four years, including the top three batting averages in UL history (Hamner occupies spots 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11).  Howser needs just eight hits in his last 10 games to secure the top three spots on the all-time single season hit list.  Hamner in 1957 was the first player to reach 200 hits in a season since Jackie Robinson in 1952, but 10 players have reached the benchmark in the 1960s, including Lou Brock, Curt Flood, Joe Adcock, and Mickey Mantle.
If Howser achieves a .400 average, the feat would stand as one of the greatest single-season feats in UL history, perhaps rivaled only by Gene Conley and Carl Erskine's 26-3 seasons (1957 and 1958), Johnny Antonelli's 30 wins in 1961, Herb Score's 421 strikeouts in 1962, and Dick Allen's 151-RBI rookie season in 1965.  But for all his individual accolades, the Monuments pennant hopes faded fast.  After sitting just 1.5 games back after a 43-36 first half, the Mons have fallen 12.5 games behind, going 35-33 while Brooklyn has gone 45-20.  Washington is 5-13 against the Bas, accounting for two-thirds of the gap between the clubs.

Havana Wins Third Governor's Cup
Sugar Kings Sweep Through IL Playoffs
HAVANA (Sept. 16) -- The Havana Sugar Kings, Manhattan's IL affiliate, won their third IL title in four years, with playoff sweeps over the Kansas City Monarchs and Montreal Alouettes.  Havana cruised to the East Division pennant by 10 games over Philadelphia with an 81-49 record, led by the bat of Ken Harrelson (21 HR, 71 RBI) and the pitching of Juan Pizarro (9-6, 2.51) and Dave McNally (10-8, 3.04).  The S-Kings swept their six playoffs games with three shutouts and and 10-2 blowout in the Cup-clincher.  Sonny Siebert pitched a pair of six-hit complete games, a 3-0 shutout of Kansas City and a 10-2 drubbing of Montreal.  The Alouettes, playing their first year in Montreal after a year as the Louisville Crackers,  won the mediocre North Division despite finishing barely over .500.  The Alouettes were in the middle of the pack in most batting and pitching categories, but benefitted from a relatively weak division and eked out a 3-2 Semi Series win over the Denver Grizzlies, who posted the IL's best record (85-45) to edge Kansas City by three games in the West Division.
