VORP, or value over
replacement player, is a statistic invented by
Keith Woolner that
demonstrates how much a hitter contributes offensively or how much a
pitcher contributes to his team in comparison to a fictitious
"replacement player," who is an average fielder at his position and a
below average hitter.

Clete's
Amazing Feat
SAN FRANCISCO (May 1) --
He is a forgotten 2nd round draft pick from five years ago, is
considered "all leather, no wood" by scouts, and had a .219
career batting average coming into this season. His name
is Clete Boyer, and he is the UL's unlikely batting leader, with
a .413 average through 26 games, 10 of which were multi-hit
games. San Francisco's 28 year old shortstop is generating
some excitement by the Bay with his hitting exploits. The
Spiders have gone through some lean years of late, but Boyer and
"Sweet Swingin" Billy Williams are sparking the league's second
best offense. San Francisco ranks second in runs, batting,
OBP, slugging, extra base hits, and stolen bases, and only dips
as low as fourth in hits and walks.
In addition to leading the league in batting, Boyer is 2nd in
slugging (.783) and OPS (1.243), and 3rd in OBP (.460) and
extra-base hits (16). Billy Williams is hitting .336-7-27,
and after hitting .242 over the last two seasons appears to have
finally reached his breakout year, catcher J.C. Martin (.355,
.412 OBP) appears to have been an inspired acquisition, and
Rocky Colavito celebrated a two-year contract extension Apr. 19
by batting 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer.
Griffin Dick Allen Staking Early Claim
on Rookie of the Year
DETROIT (May 1)
-- Already at this early date, Dick Allen appears to be
a lock for Rookie of the Year. Allen is hitting
.351-10-30 in 27 games, and is 2nd in HR and RBI and 4th
in OPS. Only 3 of his 10 HR were at Kiner Field.

Injuries Can't Derail
Superba Express
BROOKLYN
(May 1) -- Transition to a new manager and a major
injury to its top pitcher did nothing to slow down the
Brooklyn juggernaught. The five-time defending
champions lost the services of Gene Conley for two
months on April 2, and Lew Burdette and Granny Hamner
suffered shorter injuries, but the club was still 23-5
in April. Sonny Siebert (4-1, 4.03) has ably
plugged the hole in the rotation and Jim Perry (3-0,
0.71) leads the league in ERA, but the real engine
behind the '65 Bas thus far has been offense.
Brooklyn has scored 183 runs in 28 games (6.5 per game),
a full 1.3 runs per game more than second best San
Francisco. To put this huge margin in context,
just consider that the gap between 2nd and 11th is also
1.3 runs.
Four Brooklyn hitters have OPSs over 1.000, led as usual by
reigning MVP Mickey Mantle, who won Player of the Month
with a .386 average, 11 HR, 39 RBI, and 1.311 OPS.
Three of the top four hitters in the league sport screaming bats on
their caps (Del Crandall .398, Mantle .386, Felix
Mantilla .378). Only the unlikely batting leader
Clete Boyer stands in the way of a Brooklyn trifecta.
In fact, the current Superbas are starting to win
comparisons to the 1957 club. In that year,
Superbas Hamner, Minnie Minoso, Richie Ashburn, and
Sandy Amoros finished 1-4 in batting, and Hamner won the
first of three MVPs.

BOSTON FEDERALS |
BROOKLYN SUPERBAS |
CLEVELAND BARONS |
|
Herb
Score was 4-1, 2.87 on got his 99th win Apr. 16.
He is 0-3, 7.20 in three attempts to win #100...
Feds pitchers have the 2nd best opponent batting
average (.241), but have allowed the 2nd most walks
(116).
Big Game: Apr. 28: Former starter Billy
Loes (1-0, 1.38) loves life in the pen. He
pitched five shutout innings to help the Feds to a
7-3 16-inning win at Comiskey.
Mr. Putz: Rookie Jimmy Wynn, a
first-rounder in '63 is struggling, batting just
.149/.240/.209 in 67 AB -- 5th lowest VORP (-6.3)...
3B Gene Freese is hitting .247/.314/.387.
|
Jim
Perry took a 0.00 ERA into his fifth start after
allowing just a single unearned run in his first
25.1 innings. He has just three wins in six
starts despite a 0.71 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Two
of his three NDs were come-from-behind Brooklyn wins
after he left the game.
Big Game: Apr. 26: Jim Gentile's RBI
single and Charlie Neal's pinch sac fly in
the eighth broke a 1-1 tie, giving the Bas a 3-1
win, four-game sweep, and 7-0 season record against
Detroit.
Mr. Putz: The fact that any Superba could be
label a "putz" is perhaps a sign of the times.
Brooklyn's once unassailable rotation is now just
4th in the league, and fifth starter "Baby Joe"
Presko takes a large share of the blame.
Baby Joe has a 6.08 ERA in five starts (4th
worst VORP of -9.9), but still managed a 3-2 record
because of a 5.80 RSA (run support avg).
|
The
revamped offense is sputtering. The Barons
have the 3rd worst OPS and runs scored...
Don Drysdale (1-3, 6.03) and John Tsitouris
(0-2, 7.71) have been unsteady in the
rotation... Through 27 games, Cleveland has
already played seven extra-inning (4-3)and 11
one-run (6-5) games.
Big Game: Apr. 24: Gus Triandos
homered off Dean Stone in the top of the 15th
to give the Barons a 5-4 win at Fenway.
Bernie Allen was 4-for-6 with 2 doubles.
Mr. Putz: Harvey Kuenn has the 2nd worst BA
(.175), and 2nd worst SLG (.223) among UL
regulars... Don Drysdale

DETROIT GRIFFINS |
MANHATTAN GRAY SOX |
WASHINGTON MONUMENTS |
|
Already at
this early date, Dick Allen appears to be a
lock for Rookie of the Year. Allen is hitting
.351-10-30 in 27 games, and is 2nd in HR and RBI and
4th in OPS. Only 3 of his 10 HR were at Kiner
Field.
Big Game: Apr. 27: Dick Allen's RBI
single in the 9th tied the game and Ed Charles' RBI
single in the 10th won it as the Griffins edged the
Barons 9-8 in Cleveland, ending a five-game losing
streak.
Mr. Putz: Bill Stafford is making a strong
case for a four-man rotation in Motown. The
fifth starter is 1-1 with a 13.50 ERA in 3
starts (3rd worst VORP).
|
Last year's
Rookie of the Year Pete Ward will miss three
weeks with a hammie pull suffered Apr. 25.
Ward is hitting .301-4-10 in 24 games... #2 and 3
starters Bob Anderson and Ray Sadecki
are a combined 0-7, 4.52 in 11 starts. They have the
2nd and 4th lowest RSG among UL starters (1.50,
1.60).
Big Game: Apr. 18: Joe Torre's 3-run
homer off Joe Grzenda turned back a 4-3
Atlanta lead in the eighth, giving the Sox a 6-4
win.
Mr. Putz: Among UL regulars, Tom Tresh
sports the worst average (.084, 7-83), OBP, and SLG,
and is dead last in VORP (-13.0). Willie
Stargell (.143-1-2 in 56 AB) has the second
lowest VORP, despite an April 17 demotion to Havana.
|
Willie
Mays strained a ligament running the bases Apr.
12. The Mons were 10-2 before the injury, and
are 6-10 since... Johnny Antonelli 4-1, 1.65
in six starts since Opening Day... Whitey Ford
0-3 in last 4 starts.
Big Game: Apr. 21: Don Larsen anchors an
8-hit shutout and Carl Yastrzemski is 2-3 with a
homer as the Mons blank Manhattan 4-0 to end a
four-game skid.
Mr. Putz: Ron Santo may have 8 HR and 13 RBI,
but he ranks #3 on the VORP Putzometer (-7.3), with
a league-high 9 GDPs, a .216 average, .631 OPS. |

LF Gates
Brown has already matched last year's homer
output with Atlanta (then Triple-A). The
25-year-old sophomore has 7 dingers in 26 games and
is slugging .521 (second only to Harmon Killebrew).
Big Games: Apr. 27-30: The Toppers were shut
out three games in row (STL twice and DAL once),
batting just .156 (14-90).
Mr. Putz: Jim O'Toole, has a 7.47 ERA, 1.88
WHIP, the most H/9 (13.5), and the 7th worst VORP
(-7.1). Only a no-decision in his worst outing
Apr. 21 (4.0, 10 H, 7 R) prevented seven five
straight losses out of the gate... Stan Williams
has the league's highest W/9 (5.8).
|
Don
Mossi won Pitcher of the Month for April, going
5-1 in six starts. His 2.62 ERA was only third
best in the rotation however, after Tom
Sturdivant (2.09) and Ray Herbert (2.40).
Big Game: Apr. 19: Norm Cash hit a
two-run, ninth-inning homer off Danny McDevitt
to break a 4-4 tie in Washington. The 6-4
win gave the Colts a three-game sweep.
Mr. Putz: Billy Pierce has nearly doubled his
1964 ERA. Through five starts, the lefty is
2-3, 6.05, with a 1.45 WHIP and the 5th worst VORP
(-7.9).
Hal Smith
Most PA without an extra-base hit (43)
|
Steve
Bilko was 5-for-5 with two homers at Atlanta
Apr. 21, but the Texans lost 12-9.... Ranked 3rd in
hits (Bob Bailey 37, Boog Powell 32,
Zoilo Versalles 32)... 2nd worst bullpen.
Closer Ray Crone has a 12.15 ERA in six
appearances.
Big Game: Apr. 22: Boog Powell hit a
grand slam off Dave Morehead to break a 4-4
tie in the 9th at Atlanta and start a 7-1 run after
a 2-6 skid.
Mr. Putz: Billy Consolo has the third lowest
slugging percentage (.253) and 3rd worst OPS (.552)
among UL regulars. |
|
LOS ANGELES OUTLAWS |
ST. LOUIS MAROONS |
SAN FRANCISCO SPIDERS |
|
Jim
Bunning, the winningest pitcher in Outlaws
history, was 99-102 coming into this year, and is
0-2, 4.97 in four fruitless attempts to reach career
win #100.
Big Game: Apr. 13: After scoring three of
fewer runs eight games in a row, the Outlaws edged
Cleveland 7-6 in 10 innings. Frank Robinson
homered and drove in three, and Charlie James
drove in the game-winner.
Mr. Putz: One woundn't expect to find
Frank Robinson's name on a list of putzes, but
the slugging Outlaw 1B/LF is having the worst year
of his 10-year career, batting .184/.271/.282 for
the 6th worst VORP (-5.8)... Jimmie Hall has
the 2nd worst OBP (.250).
|
Won 7 of 8
Apr. 22-29... 2nd best Starters' ERA (3.37), led by
Glen Hobbie (2.66) and Bob Sadowski
(3.04)... Jerry Adair, who was batting .226,
was 0 for his last 11, and did not have a hit in 16
days, went 4-for-5 in 7- 1 win at Seals Stadium Apr.
23. He was hitless in his next seven at-bats.
Big Games: Apr. 28-29: After just one shutout
win in 26 games, Bob Sadowski shut out
Atlanta 4-0 on a five-hit shutout and Glen Hobbie
anchored a four-hit shutout shared by four
pitchers in a 1-0 win the next day.
Mr. Putz: The Maroons are the only team
without a player in the bottom 10 of batting or
pitching VORP, but if you had to pick a putz, it
would have to be Bob Aspromonte, whose .275
batting average is deceptive. He has just two
walks and three XBHs in 74 PA.
|
LF Lou
Brock had five hits in a 4-3 win at Dallas Apr.
17. Pete Rose leads the league in
triples (5) and walks (23)... Seven straight
losses since last win, 11-6 over LA on Apr. 22.
Big Game: Apr. 16: Billy Williams and
Rocky Colavito each homered twice, and Williams
drove in six runs, in a 10-4 win at Yankee Stadium.
The win ended a run of six losses.
Mr. Putz: Long relief man Rollie Sheldon
and third starter Tom Cheney have the
distinction of having the two lowest VORPs in the
league. Sheldon has a 12.50 ERA
in 18 innings, while Cheney is 1-5, 7.93 in seven
starts and has allowed a league-high 2.02 WHIP...
Steve Boros stands out like a sore thumb on the
league's 2nd best offense, hitting just
.217/.270/.304.
