Train Delay in Chicago
Bad weather,
labor dispute stall Ted Wilks Station
CHICAGO (May 16) --
The Windy City is
famous for its stormy weather, and this off-season has been no
exception. Heavy rain and snow has pounded the
Chicago
area during the winter of ’55, putting a damper on progress on the
eagerly expected Ted Wilks el-train stop across from Wrigley Field. As
if foul weather wasn’t enough of a hindrance, local steel workers
have been striking for better wages for the past two months. “To be
quite frank, we’re months behind schedule,” said construction
foreman Ed Grazanski. “Luckly the city has hashed out a deal with
the steel workers union, so at least we have men back on the job.”
Despite the resumption of construction on the station, Colts owner
Lance Mueller does not have high hopes for an opening of the station
any time soon. “We’re being realistic,” Mueller said during a
recent press conference, “there is absolutely no way the Ted Wilks
stop will be open for the 1956 season. With the delays and the
setbacks we’ve already experienced, plus planning for other
unforeseen work slow downs, we’re now projecting the construction
will be finished sometime in late fall.” In simple speak,
don’t expect trains to be stopping at Wrigley until somewhere around
the beginning of spring training…1957. Asked if he had anything to
say to the thousands of Chi-towners who’d be salivating at the idea
of easy access to Wrigley, Mueller replied, “Trust me, no one is
more upset about this than me. Those are the breaks, and truthfully,
we’ve waited much longer for much greater things…like a
championship. I think we can all handle waiting one more year for the
Ted Wilks Stop.”

Rookie Robinson Lifts
L.A.
Slugger Explodes
During Outlaws' Scoring Spree
LOS ANGELES (May 16) --
Rookie left fielder Frank Robinson had a fabulous fortnight in early May,
batting .457 with 6 HR and 22 RBI in 13 games to win Player of the Week
two weeks running. The youngster had a fairly tepid April (.227-3-14) before
finding his sweet swing 'round about May Day, which is what opposing pitchers were saying, as Robinson
crushed everything thrown in his general direction.
Mr. Robinson doesn't discriminate; he punishes
all pitchers equally. He had 3 RBIs against Chicago May 1, 10 RBIs
in 4 games against Detroit May 4-7, 4 hits and 5 RBIs against Boston May
9, 4 more hits against Boston May 11, and 3 hits (including a homer)
against New York May 14. According to the league's crack statistical
bureau, the 20-year-old's 22 RBIs in two weeks "must be some kind of
record." Robinson, the highly-touted first pick of this spring's
rookie draft, is considered by some the biggest prospect in the history of
the league, bar none.
The rookie's torrid patch fueled a resurgence by the Outlaws,
who are 9-4 in May, following a mediocre April (11-12). The club is
averaging 7.7 runs per game in May, and has failed to score five runs only
twice (an extra inning loss to Boston and a 4-2 win at New York).
Besides Robinson, Willie "Puddin Head" Jones (.432-1-9) and Cal
Abrams (.410-1-7) have had hot months. Curt Simmons has won all
three of his May starts, and closer Ray Narleski was threw six scoreless
innings, earning five saves.
The biggest win was May 6, a 20-3 blowout against Detroit, as
the Outlaws peppered four Sound pitchers with 23 hits. Jones and
Dale Long each had four hits, and Robinson and Campanella each had four
RBIs in the win.
Pierce
Fans 18, Again
Ties Own Single-Game
Strikeout Record
LOS ANGELES (May 6) --
St. Louis ace Billy Pierce, the strikeout king of the United League,
fanned 18 Chicago Colts today, tying his own single game record set on
April 9, 1954. Pierce edged Don Drysdale 3-2 with a 10-hit
performance over eight innings, allowing only one walk. The Dark
Reds scored two in the first on RBIs by Gil Coan and Hector Lopez, and
added a third run on Bill White's RBI single in the fourth. Pierce
struck out Gus Zernial four times, Earl Averill three times, and four
other players twice each. It was the fourth time in his career that
the lefty has fanned 17 or more batters in a game. Whitey Ford is
the only other pitcher in UL history with a 17-strikeout game (see box
below).
Dr.
Jeckyl and Mr. Pascual
Shutouts and
Thrashings in Detroit
DETROIT (May 16) --
Detroit's young pitchers are adjusting to life in the big league, and are
having growing pains. Twenty-two year old Cuban starter Camilo
Pascual started 25 games for Chicago last year, so isn't quite a rookie,
but his first year with Detroit has been no picnic in the park.
Pascual posted a 1-4 record and 6.14 in April, and his first May start was
his worst of the year to that point: 12 hits and 7 runs in 5 innings in a
9-0 loss at Los Angeles.
On May 10, Pascual shut out San
Francisco with a seven-hit complete game, earning just his second win in
eight starts. But four days later, the Cuban was back to his old
tricks, taking the loss in a 22-3 thrashing by Louisville. Pascual retired just two batters, allowing five hits and five
runs. Five Colonels homered off of five different Detroit pitchers,
as Hank Aaron drove in six runs and Wally Post and Bill Skowron each drove
in four. Pascual and three Bobs (Grim, Kelly, and Trowbridge) each gave up
at least four runs. No pitcher lasted longer than two innings.
Eight days earlier, in a game in L.A., the Sound were spanked 20-3 by the
Outlaws. In that game, Johnny Podres left in the second inning
trailing 9-2, and the score was 17-2 after the fourth.
Not Priddy
LOS ANGELES (May 8) --
Boston second baseman Jerry Priddy made three throwing errors today, including a pair in the pivotal six-run eighth inning, as Los
Angeles rallied to beat Boston 8-3 at the Coliseum. Priddy, a
two-time Gold Glove winner who joined the Beacons this season, had committed only one error coming into
today's game. "The sun got in my eyes," the 35-year-old
veteran explained after the game. "Three friggin' times!" an
incensed Frank Hiller rebutted, shaking his fist at Priddy and straining
an elbow ligament. The five unearned runs cost Hiller his third
straight loss.
Boston took the lead on Hank Bauer's solo homer, and led 3-2
going into the bottom of the eighth, when Los Angeles plated six runs on
five hits, three walks, and two Priddy errors.
