Joe Cunningham of the Durham Tobacconists had a fine season this year and today he accepted the AA Best Hitter for 1969.
The 38-year-old right fielder put up a .330 average and a .524 on-base percentage, piling up 63 hits, 10 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 33 RBIs and 65 runs scored.

 | Saturday, August 16th, 1969: It's Over! Durham Defeats Memphis
It was Durham and Memphis challenging one other in the 1969 American Association AA Cup this season. On paper, there wasn't much difference between the two strong ballclubs, but on the field, the verdict went to the Tobacconists.
It was the 1st for the new league champions. They defeated the Chicks 3-1 in the series, winning the last game today by a 7-3 score.
The new champs finished the regular season 32-22 and claimed first place in the pennant race.

 | Friday, August 8th, 1969: Bennett Whitewashes Tobacconists
Dennis Bennett of the Memphis Chicks just toyed with the Durham Tobacconists today, blanking them 8-0. He was almost untouchable, baffling them on a 3-hit shutout with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.
"I'm sweating now because it's hot in here," Bennett said in the clubhouse after the game. "But it didn't even feel like I was sweating out there."
One of his teammates said it was easy to play behind him today. "It was like he's just playing with the hitters and doing whatever he wanted to do."
In 4 starts this year Bennett has posted 1 win while suffering no losses. He has pitched 34 innings, allowed 23 hits, struck out 16 and has a 2.65 ERA.
