| Breaking News | | Monday, September 23rd, 1968: UL Awards Player of the Week Trophy A battle-tested Roger Maris declared war on opposing pitchers last week, attacking the ball like the well-schooled veteran he is. Today the 34-year-old Atlanta right fielder collected the United League Player of the Week Award.
He wrapped up the week with a .481 average, 13 hits in 27 at-bats, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs and 9 runs scored.
This season Maris is hitting at a .287 pace with 40 home runs, 110 RBIs and has scored 106 times. | | Friday, August 30th, 1968: Hit #2500 for Monuments Mays He made it! Willie Mays got hit #2500! The Monuments center fielder got his milestone hit at Griffith Stadium against Atlanta. But it wasn't enough to bring home the victory. Washington was beaten by the Hilltoppers 12-2.
Mays's reaction to his accomplishment was nonchalant. He doffed his batting helmet to acknowledge the fans, who were chanting his name.
His manager said, "Willie doesn't pay any attention to individual statistics, the only thing he cares about is winning. He will be more concerned that we lost the game."
Mays finished the game with 1 hit in 4 at-bats.
Mays boasts a lifetime batting average of .280 with 2500 hits, 490 homers, 1614 runs scored and 1593 RBIs. | | Friday, August 30th, 1968: Atlanta MR Injured "I'm frustrated right now," said Atlanta reliever Joe Grzenda. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, that's where he will be spending the next 2 weeks. Grzenda suffered a tender elbow in today's game against Washington while throwing a pitch. "Believe me," he said, "I won't be out a day longer than I have to be."
This season Grzenda has made 23 relief appearances and has 7 saves. His record is 2-1 with 21 strikeouts in 40 innings with a 3.38 ERA. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | 2B Phil Gagliano | torn labrum (Shoulder) | 5-6 months | On DL, eligible for return (60-day DL) | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 90-70, .563 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 9.0 GB | | Record at home | 48-32, .600 PCT | | Record on the road | 42-38, .525 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 5-9, .357 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 22-24, .478 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 33-22, .600 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 57-48, .543 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 16-13, .552 PCT | | Record in May | 10-17, .370 PCT | | Record in June | 11-11, .500 PCT | | Record in July | 17-7, .708 PCT | | Record in August | 20-10, .667 PCT | | Record in September | 16-12, .571 PCT |
