Sends Hosts to Semis
MANHATTAN (July 8) -- Joe Torre's
four hits led a 14-hit barrage that buried the Atlanta Toppers 7-3 in a decisive
game five that clinch a semifinal appearance for the Manhattan Gray Sox.
The hosts finished 3-1 to claimed second place in Group A behind the Detroit
Griffins. Manhattan lost their opening game to Detroit 2-1 on a Bob Gibson
six-hitter, then defeated San Francisco, Boston, and Atlanta to reach the last
four. Detroit won two 2-1 games and nearly blew a 7-3 lead over San
Francisco in the ninth inning of a must-win game, but held on to win 7-6 and win
the group.
In Group B, Los Angeles ran the table with four
straight wins, including a 13-2 thrashing of Washington in their second game and
Larry Dierker's three-hit shutout in their last. Cleveland and St. Louis
were both 2-1 in the first three games, setting up an elimination matchup on the
final day. Johnny Podres's threw a three-hitter and drove in the decisive
run in a 2-1 win over Don Sutton, clinching the last semifinal spot for the
Barons.
Manhattan will play Los Angeles and Cleveland faces
Detroit in the semifinals.

gave the Feds a 4-0 lead, and
Mike Cuellar held on for the
win, allowing eight hits and
striking out six. Ray
Narleski notched his 11th save,
and Ron Kline homered but took
the loss for the Spiders.
Detroit 2, Manhattan 1
Bob Gibson spoiled the hosts'
party with a six-hit complete
game, earning just his second
win in 12 starts in a pitchers'
duel with Bob Anderson.
Johnny Edwards doubled to lead
off the fifth, and scored on
GIbson's RBI groundout, and
Eddie Bressoud added an RBI
single in the sixth.

off Don Sutton in the first
inning and Jimmie Hall was
4-for-4 with a home run as the
Outlaws coasted. Tony
Perez had half of the Maroons
eight hits and drove in three
runs.
Dallas 6, Washington 5
Reliever Casey Cox helped
himself win after hitting a
leadoff double in the seventh
that led to the go-ahead run.
Washington outlhit the Texans
12-6 and blew a 4-0 lead in the
fourth, when Bobby Del Greco hit
a two-run double. Bob
Trowbridge, 37, earned his first
save of the year.

the Feds rolled to the top of
the group. Denis Menke and
Frank Howard homered for
Detroit, but Boston led 5-0
after two, chasing Pedro Ramos
after five innings.
Atlanta 3, San Francisco 2
Steve Carlton went the distance
with a six-hit gem for his 10th
win, and Harmon Killebrew drove
in all three runs, including a
fifth inning home run off Fergie
Jenkins, as the Spiders suffered
their second one-run loss.

Earl Francis anchored a two-hit
shutout, with Jackie Collum
closing down the ninth, as
top-seeded Cleveland rolled to a
3-0 win. The Barons broke
a 0-0 tie in the seventh,
scoring twice on a single,
error, wild pitch, and sac fly,
and added a spare rib in the
eighth on Gene Freese's second
hit of the game.
Los Angeles 13, Washington 2
The Bandits ripped Rick Wise and
Bill Monbouquette for 15 hits,
including five doubles and two
homers en route to a 13-2
blowout. Frank Robinson
was 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and five
other Outlaws had two hits.

Williams' 2-run homer tied the
game in the sixth, before Billy
